Some students may well become able to progress into more independent living, renting houses or flats in nearby towns. A specialist team of Support Careworkers provide agreed levels of support and encouragement to these former students.

When students move into independent accommodation they initially require a high level of support which is gradually phased down as they become more independent and able to cater for themselves. Regular detailed reviews and monitoring enable the staff to gauge how each individual is progressing.

Occasionally day students also are offered the opportunity to move into supported accommodation as they develop towards greater independence. The Project is well-equipped to provide this increasingly important service.

Residents with longer term needs are accommodated in The Bothy, a homely and well maintained detached house in the grounds of Minstead Lodge, where up to five residents live all year round with their own dedicated staff.  During the day the timetable includes similar activities to the students at the Lodge - horticultural training, craftwork and catering - and visits to a local day centre for people with learning disabilities.  At other times residents are expected to undertake their fair share of domestic duties such as cooking and cleaning and are given all the support they need to access local amenities and leisure activities.
